| Measurement of sprayed skin thickness |
Sprayed skins for vehicle instruments and controls and for airbag cladding are sprayed using a robot-guided nozzle. The thickness of the sprayed skin is inspected during the spraying process. The eddy current sensor measures the distance to the nickel-coated spray mould. The eddy current sensor has an opening in the centre through which the laser sensor measures the distance to the sprayed part. When subtracted, both signals provide the thickness of the applied sprayed skin.

| Thickness measurement of yarn |
The thickness variations of the yarn are measured in draw frame machines and compensated by closed-loop controlled stretching equipment. At the input of the draw frame, the thickness variations are transferred via probe rollers to an eddy current displacement sensor. The sensor measurement signal is used as the basis for the control circuit in the following stretching equipment. A second displacement sensor, which measures the thickness of the sliver at the draw frame output, is employed for quality monitoring and documentation.

| Thickness measurement of rubber film |
Close thickness tolerances are specified for the manufacture of rubber film which is rolled using calender rollers. A system with three fixed tracks has been adapted for in-line inspection of the thickness. For each track an eddy current sensor is built into a jockey follower system which measures against an invar roller. When the jockey roller is located on the rubber material, then the eddy current sensor moves away from the calender roller and the distance of the sensor to the roller corresponds to the thickness of the material.

| Thickness measurement of battery separators |
A measurement system with high spatial resolution and a high sampling rate is needed for the determination of the profile structure of battery separators in the field of in-line quality assurance. For the thickness measurement laseroptical sensors are used. PC software processes and analyses the measurement data and computes the thickness values.

| Non-contacting online layer-thickness measurement of foils |
The KS2 combination sensor measures the layer thickness on foils in a non-contact and thus non-wearing process. The measurement of coatings on foils (e.g. adhesive layer on self-adhesive foils) is based on the capacitive principle. A non-contact capacitive displacement sensor is positioned at a fixed distance from a metal surface (e.g. transport roller). The foil passes through the measuring gap and as a dielectric changes the capacity of the sensor. With constant foil thickness the output signal only depends on the layer thickness. In addition to the capacitive displacement sensor an eddy-current displacement sensor is also integrated in the sensor housing. The eddy-current displacement sensor measures the distance from the transport roller. The signals of both measuring principles are combined arithmetically. This combination sensor principle guarantees that the measured thickness value is not influenced by possible distance changes.

| Thickness monitoring on straightening plants |
Displacement sensors are employed in front of the inlet for panels on straightening plants to detect double sheets and an accurate acquisition of upright edges. For this task a sensor is mounted above and below the moving panels. Irrespective of the actual position of the panels, the accurate material thickness is obtained by simple coupling of the synchronously measured distance values from both sensors.
